Frequently Asked

What are your training methods?

We are proud to say we are Force Free and Positive Reinforcement Trainers! Our training methods are cutting edge, science-based, and designed to be fun for you and your dog. They’re effective, too! We teach all of the “basic manners” skills you’re familiar with, and much more. The training skills we work on with our dayschool attendees include sit, down, stay, come when called, relax in a crate and a place, targeting nose and paw, and loose-leash walking. Our program focuses on self-control. Your puppy will learn to behave politely around food and toys (without jumping up & trying to steal them) and wait for permission to go through doorways and to exit a crate. All of this is without nagging your puppy to “leave it,” or “get off.” Since your pup will be under our direct supervision, your pup will not get to practice these common, frustrating behaviors: jumping up on people, chewing furniture, nipping people, counter-surfing, and pulling on leash. Our head trainers are graduates of the Karen Pryor Academy, the Harvard of dog training schools. Our puppy and dog counselors undergo extensive training on the care, handling, and developmental needs of the dogs and puppies in our program. In short, we’re experts.

My vet/breeder said to wait until my puppy has all its shots before taking anywhere. When should I start training my puppy?

Thanks to modern medicine, this well-meaning advice is outdated. The current recommendations of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior are to begin puppy socialization as soon as possible, especially before twelve weeks of age. Puppies have a “critical socialization period” from six weeks to sixteen weeks, and it is crucial that training and socialization begins during this time. Is dog training really worth the investment?

We believe so, yes!
Behavior problems are the #1 reason dogs are re-homed or relinquished and some times euthanized.
We specialize in behavior modification with the goal to keep dogs in their current homes (though sometimes re-homing is best, and we can help you do that).
With my experience of working with fear, reactivity, aggression, over-arousal, and more, and by continuing our own education, we provide clients with training solutions that work best for them and their dogs.

What is the time commitment required to train my dog?

Training is most successful when owners are committed to working daily with their dogs. Most of our basic programs require a few minutes of training per day. Training plans are designed to incorporate training in your day to day activities.
Behavior modification requires an additional time commitment, as owners may need to log their training sessions, record training sessions, or discuss training with the trainer between sessions so we can make adjustments on the go.

Giving You and Your Pet a Pawsitive Experience

At Pawsitive Peaks, we're dedicated to making sure that pet owners view their veterinary clinic as the first step in addressing their pet's behavior. Additionally, we prioritize the emotional well-being of each pet during veterinary visits and training sessions. We're passionate about using positive, science-based training methods to teach pet owners how to motivate and connect with their furry companions. Our focus is on training animals that have fearful, stressful, or anxious behaviors, and we take pleasure in empowering canine and feline patients to have control and choice during veterinary visits and training sessions.
